England U15 Combined Events: Rebecca Wright 7th
After having won the South Of England Champs in December, Rebecca Wright lined up for these championships alongside 35 other competitors.
She was in high spirits after having annexed the National title for Shot Putt a month earlier at the same venue.
For Rebecca the event got off to a good start with a 5th place overall in the 60 metres hurdles in 9.40. Next up was the long jump and, although slipping to 7th overall, she grabbed a PB with 4.66 metres.
The third event was the shot putt, where Rebecca ranks number 1 in the UK. A first round putt of 11.23 metres won the event overall for that discipline and moved her back to 3rd overall after three events. Could she hold on?
The afternoon session started with the High Jump, which we knew was her weak event. Rebecca has not received much coaching for this and, although she jumped 1.35 metres, it was not what she was hoping for.
So for the final event, the 800 metres, Rebecca was lying outside the top 6, which took her out of the first 800 race which we were hoping she might make. Rebecca still took three seconds off her PB with 2 mins 43 seconds.
Rebecca finally placed 7th from 35 athletes in this event, which was a great performance overall, and she was 4th English athlete.
Rebecca will now contest the county championships for this event where her aim is to reach the English Schools in September for combined events. Her coach will now look to get Rebecca some specialist support for the High Jump.
