Medals and P.B.'s at National Age Group Indoor Champs
At last weekend’s National Age Group Indoor Championships at Sheffield there were many good performances from Woodford athletes. Led by gold medals for Medwin Odamtten and Thomas Niewczasinski-Kirkland there were also medals for Gwen Datey, Rebecca Wright and Caitlin Hancock. There were several personal bests from the Woodford contingent.
Medwin Odamtten had already been showing good indoor form and he went into the U/20 National 60m Championship as the fastest in the field. After qualifying easily in his heat with 6.97 secs, Medwin then won his semi equalling his personal best of 6.67 secs and repeated that time to comfortably take the final and win his gold medal. In the women’s U/20 60m Gwen Datey made it to the semi where she recorded a season’s best of 7.67 secs but did not progress to the final. However, over 200m Gwen placed 3rd in the final to gain her bronze medal with a season’s best of 24.69 secs.
In the U/17 men’s 60m there were personal bests for both Marcel Winter and Ethan Franklin. Both progressed to the semis where Marcel placed 6th with 7.22 secs after a p.b. in his heat to qualify with 7.16 secs. Ethan was 5th in his semi with a p.b. of 7.13 secs having earlier recorded a then p.b. of 7.15 secs to qualify. Over 200m both Marcel and Ethan again made the semis. Marcel was 3rd in his with a p.b. of 22.56 secs as was Ethan with 22.88 secs having recorded a p.b. of 22.80 secs in his heat.
In the U/17 women's age group multi-eventer Rebecca Wright picked up a silver medal in the shot with 12.61m, and also placed 5th in the 60mH with 8.92 secs after 6.87 secs heat and 6.77 secs semi. Rebecca also made the semi of the 60m where she recorded 8.04 secs after an 8.02 secs heat. Maia Fisher also made the 60mH semis where she recorded a personal best of 9.13 secs after a 9.19 secs heat.
In the U/15 age group Thomas Niewczasinski-Kirkland took the 300m title with a personal best of 37.24 secs after qualifying with 38.02 secs. There was also a silver medal for Caitlin Hancock in the long jump where her significant p.b. of 5.47m placed 2nd, Caitlin also raced over 200m where she reached the semi placing 4th with 26.14 secs having recorded a p.b. of 26.01 secs in her heat. Also, in those heats Evanna Eze recorded a season’s best of 26.87 sec as did Azzurra Cioni in her 60m heat with 8.58 secs.
This next weekend sees the Senior Indoor Championships in Birmingham.
