South Of England CC Relay: U15 Girls 4th!
A fine sunny day greeted our three runners making up an Under 15 girls team at Wormwood Scrubs. The course, run around football pitches, was relatively flat with a couple of sticky patches following rain from the week before.
First off for the Woodettes over the 2k course was Bethan-Rose Davies, and at halfway a group of six including our athlete had broken clear. In the last 750 metres Maya Jobbins from Aldershot broke clear leaving a group of three to fight out the next three places. Bethan was just behind Connie Easter from Norwich with Emma Davies from Bracknell passing our athlete right on the line. Bethan’s time for the 2k circuit was 7 mins 14 secs, a fine run against top opposition from the South.
Next away was 800 metre specialist Natasha Wynn who took to this circuit in excellent fashion. Natasha disposed of the Norwich and Bracknell athletes early on but had to chase the South Of England XC champion Katie Pye. Natasha ran brilliantly and although the Aldershot athlete extended their lead Natasha ran 7 mins 05 secs for the 2k circuit, which was the 3rd fastest time overall on the day.
Matilda Frith took care of the final leg. Matilda is maturing into a fine endurance runner and this was confirmed by an excellent win in a Chingford League 10 days ago over 5 k in 21 mins 38 secs. Although the dreaded Aldershot squad were well clear by now. Matilda went off hard and held 2nd spot for much of the circuit. Unfortunately for us, Windsor and Herne Hill had placed their fastest runners on the last leg and gradually closed down on our runner. Matilda had a great run despite losing two places late on to bring the Woodettes into 4th spot, putting some big endurance clubs behind us.
It was a fine team by our girls and they should be proud of their efforts. Well done to all three girls.
