England Indoor Age Group Championships
Several Woodford athletes competed in the National Indoor age group Championships at Sheffield over the weekend. Performances were led by a Shot gold for U/15 Rebecca Wright, a 60m silver for Medwin Odamtten and a 200m bronze for Alex Foster. Several others made finals, recorded personal bests or otherwise ran well.
U/15 Rebecca Wright competed in three events; in the 60m she made the semi where she placed 5th with 8.10 secs, close to her p.b. of 8.08secs, having recorded 8.17 secs in her heat. In the 60mH, Rebecca recorded 9.47 secs in her heat, 9.30 secs in her semi before finishing 4th in the final with a personal best of 9.23 secs. The Shot Put saw her take gold, winning by over a metre whilst improving her personal best by over half metre to 12.28m.
Medwin Odamtten’s silver medal came in the U/20 60m. Winning each of his heat and semi with 6.90 secs and 6.80 secs respectively Medwin improved his personal best to 6.78 secs to place 2nd in the final beating the first and second finishers from last weekend’s Southern Championshios where Medwin was dq’d in the final. Also running well over 60m was U/15 Alex Foster who just missed out on a medal as he placed fourth in 7.48 secs, having recorded p.b.s of 7.44 secs and 7.41 secs to qualify. Alex did however pick up a medal in the 200m where he placed 3rd in a personal best of 23.52 secs after 23.67 secs in his heat.
In the U/20 Women’s 60m both Shona Vincent and Gwen Datey were close to their best. Shona progressed through to the final where she placed 8th with 7.65 secs, having recorded 7.68 secs and then equalling her personal best of 7.59 secs to qualify from the semi. Gwen was faster in her heat where 7.64 secs which took her through to the semi, but the 7.65 secs recorded there just missed a final place. Yemi Mary John progressed to the U/20 200m final with a good 24.23 secs in her heat, but just missed out on a medal in the final as her 24.51 secs placed 4th. Another to just miss a medal was U/15 Thomas Niewczasinski-Kirkland where his personal best of 38.70 secs placed him 4th over 300m having qualified from his heat with 39.13 secs. Thomas recorded another personal best in the Long Jump as he placed 5th with 5.38 secs. Just missing out on a medal in the U/20 HJ was Joba Ashiru who despite not being 100 pct fit nevertheless cleared 1.94m to place 4th only losing a medal on count-back.
In their heats both Alfie Wood (U/17 800m 2m04.87 secs) and Mia Fisher ( (U/17 W 60mH 9.42 secs) both recorded personal bests.
