South Of England Title for Rebecca Wright

Over recent decades many athletes have been looking to emulate what the likes of multi-eventers Denise Lewis, Daley Thompson, Jess Ennis and more recently Katerina Johnson-Thompson have achieved in the past. Woodford as a Club has a fine tradition of producing international multi-eventers and amongst the very many, they include Olympic decathletes David Bigham and Dan Awde and women multi-event internationals Sue Wright, Gladys Bird and Kim Hagger.

Recently Rebecca Wright, a superb all-round athlete, showed the first signs that she too could be an excellent multi-eventer. Taking part in her very first pentathlon, Rebecca scored an excellent victory in the South Of England U15 championship. Three of the events within the programme Rebecca had never competed in prior to the event where twenty-one competitors lined up.

The 60m hurdles gave her a great start with 3rd place in 9.69 secs. The High Jump also gave her 3rd place in 1.51m. The Shot Put saw Rebecca improving again with 11.16m, another Club record and up to 12th in the UK rankings for that event. The Long Jump of 4.59m placed her 3rd. The final event being the 800m she got some tips from endurance coach John Stow before running a very useful 2 minutes 46 secs for 6th in that event. Rebecca's overall score was 2959 points and her winning overall margin was by 50 points. Rebecca was over the moon with this result.
