EYAL Match 3, Peterborough: 4th

Our latest match up at sunny Peterborough, saw us up against three clubs all in top 8 in the league along with ourselves. It proved to be a disappointing match for us, placing 4th just 30 points behind Thurrock, with Nene Valley and Havering over 100 points ahead of us.

Unfortunately for us we were without the services of Sidnie Ward and Joe Geller (both injured) and Kyesha Robinson(unwell).

In the Under 13 girls we were 5th with 45 points. Shona Vincent used a slight tailwind to her advantage with two PBs in the 100 m(4th) and 200m (2nd) and also a PB in the long jump(5th). Charlotte Seattton and Zahara Malcolm also competed well, as did Olivia Roberts in her first outing for us in the 1500m.

In the Under 15 girls we were 5th with 82 points. Ademilolia Olugbode did well again with two 2nds in the 100 and 200. There was an excellent debut for Tilley White in the 300m, placing 5th in the A string. Andrea Golban, reliable as ever, had two 1st places in the Hammer and Shot. Simibiyat Siriru managed 1st in the B string Shot.

In the Under 17 Womens we were 4th with 86 points. Aimee Gilbert, another excellent thrower coached by Norman Simmons, won the Hammer and took 2nd in the Discus and 5th in the Shot. Credit here must go to Lacey Fuhr for covering events way outside hercomfort zone.

In the Under 13 boys we were 2nd with 102 points. Kaiden Chambers, another year 6, was 3rd in the A string 100m, 2nd A string 200m, and took the club across the line in 1st place in the 4 x 100m relay. Jacob Nicholson won the B string 200m. Samuel Oshodi, such a versatile athlete, was 2nd in the 800m, 3rd in the A string Shot and 2nd in the 75m Hurdles. Maxwell Chinn, yet another Year 6, was 3rd in the 1500m in a PB, just failing to catch the Essex Champion, Ford, at the end. Another great club lad is Luke Finch, partaking in any event asked of him in order to gain points for the club. Thesame should be said of Cem Guler. A word of praise for yet another Year 6, Rohan Arnold-Fincher, who fell in the 800m but bravely got to his feet to finish.

The Under 15 boys we were 3rd with 112 points. Zac Islam Moore was in great form, winning the B string 200m and followed this up with a fine win over 300m. Todd Maleary won the B string 1500m in a PB, just behind his brother Hayden, who was 3rd in the A string. Rhys Martin, another under Norman Simmons, won the Hammer, and came 2nd in the Javelin and 3rd in the Discus.

The Under 17 Men were brilliant on the day, picking up a massive 129 points for 2nd. Jos Farquharson won the A string 100m and was 2nd in the A string 200m. Adam Mountford, our county champion over 400m, won the A string here. Chibudo Ike was excellent, picking up vital points which included a Pole Vault win. Thomas Finch, another all-rounder, won the Discus, was 3rd in the B string javelin, and also completed 1500m in his busy schedule. Baker Lubwama was 2nd in the A Triple Jump whilst George Kabasubabo was 1st B string Triple Jump. Frank Moore won the A string Javelin and was 2nd B string Discus. Jack Kilmister won the A string Hammer and was 2nd in the A Shot.

Mention should be made of those Under 17s who competed on Sunday then to find themselves sitting exams the next day. You are a great credit to our club.

We now sit 10th in the league and a final placing between 7th and 12th will guarantee the club a place in the Plate final on the 4th September. So it is vital that we make a top three finish in both our matches at Ipswich on the 3rd July and Bedford on the 7th August. Without doubt, with a full turnout, we are a match for any of the top clubs in this league.

I would like to thank the officials for their hard work at Peterborough and, in particular, Teresa Sayers for stepping in right at the last minute to enable maximum points for the club. Also to the parents who transported the athletes to Peterborough, which was a long drive.

Finally to our excellent Team Managers - Helen Finch, Wendy Fuhr and Paul Cheal - for all their hard work before and on the day itself.

John Stow
