Indoor Update

Indoor performances from Woodford athletes over the weekend were led by gold medals at the British Universities (BUCS) Championships at Sheffield for Omololu Abiodun and Jon Cook. There were other useful performances in Sheffield and elsewhere, and Tifffany Porter raced in the televised Glasgow Grand Prix over 60mH where she placed 3rd with 7.99 secs.

It was in the men's 200m where Omololu Abiodun picked up his gold medal, retaining the 200m title that he won in 2015. In a tough schedule that started with heats of the 4x200m on Saturday evening, on Sunday, Omololu cruised through the rounds, winning his heat in 21.60 secs, his semi in 21.47 secs, before winning the title with 21.40 secs. Disappointingly however, Omololu was persuaded by his ill-advised University Team Manager to then run in the final of the 4x200m, before he was recovered from his 200m final, and he sustained a hamstring injury which sadly appeared to be quite serious. One can only hope it does not significantly disrupt his outdoor season.

The other BUCS gold medal came from Jon Cook (below, right) in the 1500m where he won a tactical race in 3m59.49 secs after a 3m54.89 secs semi. Jon Cook by Alex WardleSam Benge was also in action in the heats of that event where he recorded 4m22.59 secs. There was one other medal, in the men's triple jump where Thalosang Thsireletso placed 2nd with a personal best of 15.60m. Christman Ihume recorded 12.82 in the qualification round of that event.

In the women's 800m, Anna Clark made the final where she placed 5th with 2m16.30 secs, after a 2m15.26 secs semi. In the heats of the men's 3000m Bradley Wattleworth showed good form, although missing out on a place in the final he clocked a personal best of 8m35.75 secs. In the men's 60m Oluminde Ogunseitan reached the semi-final where he recorded 7.09 secs, a season's best.

The previous weekend at Lee Valley there were National Masters titles for Ayamba Akim and Bernadine Pritchett. Ayamba won the W40 high jump title with 1.64m, and then this weekend took the Southern title with 1.63m, whilst Bernadine took the W45 800m title with 2m27.65 secs, and during the week at the Lee Valley Open improved to 2m26.34 secs.

There was further good news of Ed Shepherd, currently studying in the US, and two weeks after his 3000m PB, he set a best for the Mile as he placed 6th in a race in Seattle with a time of 4m08.76 secs. Also in the US, Shana Cox opened her indoor season with a 2nd place over 400m at Blacksburg Virginia, in 54.57 secs, and the previous weekend in Geneva, Ohio, Cindi Ofili raced twice over 60m, clocking 7.45 secs on each occasion, and also over 60mH where she recorded 8.14 secs.
