African Championships, Porto Novo, Benin

WGEL athletes were also competing in the African Championships in Porto Novo, Benin over the last few days, and there was news of Tosin Oke, Tim Abeyie and Nusrat Ceesay.

Reigning Commonwealth Games champion, and former British international Tosin Oke, now representing Nigeria, won his second African title in the triple jump with a leap of 16.98m (+1.2). This came a few days after Tosin retained his Nigerian title in Calabar with a leap of 17.23m (+0.8), improving his personal best, and WGEL club record by 1cm. Also competing in Porto Novo, was another former British international, Tim Abeyie. Now representing Ghana, Tim placed 3rd in his 200m semi-final, just missing a place in the final and clocked a season's best of 20.98 secs (-1.2). He also reached the 100m semi-final, placing 4th with 10.55 secs (-0.8)m after recording 10.45 secs (-0.7) in his heat, and ran on the Ghana 4x100m team that placed 3rd in 39.40 secs. Nusrat Ceesay, now representing Gambia, placed 6th in her heat of the 400mH recording 58.61 secs.
