Woodford’s fell race devotees largely stayed away from Orion’s annual midsummer fell race at Chingford last Friday with just a brace of Holfords taking part.

GB selections for European U/23 Champs

Three Woodford Green athletes have been selected to represent GB & NI in the forthcoming European U/23 Championships, due to be held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, July 11-16. Daniel Rowden who made the semi-finals of the World Junior Championships last season, is selected over 800m, Jack Lawrie who was 4th in the European Junior Championships two years ago is selected ,for the 400m Hurdles, and Joseph Dewar the silver medallist from those same European Juniors is selected for both the 100m and 4x100m relay.

SAL3 WGEL 3rd as heat rises

Our team finished third in the third SAL match of the season, at Bury St Edmunds, behind Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets and Luton. Ilford were unusually strong in fourth, ahead of hosts West Suffolk and West Norfolk. Top scorer Iris Verweij narrowly missed out on victory in the 400m hurdles, but won the 100m hurdles and A string high jump (on countback to B string winner Rebecca Fafowora) in addition to 3 unscheduled throws performances. Man of the match Chris Linque edged out teammate Devon Douglas in the discus (49.70 to 48.34).

England U/20 & U/23 Championships, plus other news

Bedford hosted the England U/20 and U/23 Championships at the weekend, which doubled as the Trials for the GB & NI teams for the European U/20 and U/23 Championships. There were many good performances in the warm weather, and from Woodford athletes there was a national title for Daniel Rowden. Medals were also won by Jack Lawrie, Joseph Dewar, Canaan Solomon, Will Grimsey and James Bongart. Personal bests were also set by Lawrie, Dewar, Anna Clark and Shayne Dewar.
