YA Awards Night

The 2017 Young Athletes Winter Awards Night was held in the clubhouse on Tuesday evening. YA Co-Secretary, John Stow, who has brought most of the athletes concerned to the club and coached them, presided over affairs. President Jan Holst was in attendance and GB athlete Canaan Solomon presented the awards.

A good crowd of eager athletes, parents and club members were there to applaud the athletes' fine achievements. And at the end of the evening Club Secretary David Hollingworth presented John Stow himself with an award - Clubman of the Year, very much deserved for the intensive, passionate work he does with the YA section.

YA success at Essex Individual XC

The cold wind blowing straight  off the Thames Estuary onto Hadleigh Park meant Tuesday’s Essex Primary Individual XC Champs felt like the good old days of the Met league, without the mud. The conditions, however, didn’t put off our 14 battle-hardened Young Athletes, racing this time in their school colours. Each race had 45 runners on average and each runner had already qualified in the top four of their district, so the standard was high and the competition fierce.

In the year 4 Girls race Isobelle Matheron of Fawbert and Barnard had an amazing run over 1000m with a brilliant 4th place, beyond expectation according to her happy coach, and our next year 4 in was Kallie Jackson from Churchgate CofE with a fantastic 15th.

2017 London Marathon

8 of our men ran the London Marathon today: Daniel Steel 2:30.00, Gavin Lewis 2:38.10, Harold Wyber 2:42.51, Tomaz Plibersek 2:49.16, Omar Mansour 2:58.39, M55 Alun Evans 3:29.36, M70 Anthony Bradley 6:52. And Tim Prendergast in the World Para Athletics World Cup 2:41.38.

Daniel's PB had been 2:30.06, and he wanted to knock a couple of minutes off that. Dan Steel VLM 2017He went through halfway in 1:14.20, so lost a little time over the second half and just managed to clip 6" off his PB. Frustrating not to go under the 2:30 barrier!!
