Woodford young athletes gain three firsts and a second at the Chelmsford Open Meeting.

Returning to competition, Lee Mathurin showed he is still a force to be reckoned with as he won the Under 20 discus with a throw of 46.06m.. Yousef Zatat emulated Lee in winning the under 17 discus with 39.89m while Sam Turner took the under 20 javelin with 52.16m..

For the girls, Katherine Birch took 2nd. spot in the under 17 discus with 24.89m..

News from the US

Continuing to mix racing with warm weather training in California, U/20, Junior Ejehu recorded 10.76 secs (+1.5) in Los Angeles,Sunday, ahead of 400m specialist Nick Leavey who clocked 10.95 secs. Over 200m ,Nick just edged Junior with times of 21.76 secs (-0.2) and 21.82s secs respectively. in Oxford, Ohio, Sarah Bird was in action over 5000m where she recorded 18m14.27 sesc.

Essex Young Athletes Relays


5 teams from Woodford Green with Essex Ladies competed in this year's championships on a warm and sunny afternoon. 

The Under 17 men's team struck gold .Robbie Meadows, recovering from a calf injury, was 2nd on the 1st leg in 7mins 56secs - a fine effort for the 1.8 mile route. Dan Yaxley maintained our challenge with a good 8 mins 36 secs stint to keep us in 2nd and then, on the last lap, Liam Blaikie ran a blinder to overhaul the Southend runner and place Woodford 1st in 8 minutes exactly. Robbie and Liam ran the 2nd and 3rd fastest laps of the day, 


Track and Field Round-up

Taking a break from warm weather training in California, World Junior 4x100m representative Junior Ejehu competed in an invitational meeting at Claremont, California on Saturday, recording a personal best over 400m  as he placed second in 49.09 secs and was also 3rd over 200m in 21.76 secs (-0.5). Also in the US, Butler University based Sarah Bird was close to her personal best over 1500m as she recorded 4m46.45 secs at a meeting in Greencastle. Closer to home several WGwEL athletes were in action at the Havering and Lee valley Open meetings
