English National CC 2009: Young Athletes

The highlight of the young athlete races at Parliament Hill during Saturday’s English National Cross Country Championships was undoubtedly the Junior Men’s race for which Ronnie Sparke claimed a bronze medal and our team was only 11 points adrift from winning a team medal of the same hue. There was also a modest supporting cast of our runners in the other races with some fine individual performances but half term absences took their toll and we only managed to field scoring fours in two other races.

Aviva Indoor Grand Prix

WGwEL athletes were in international action at Birmingham's NIA at the Aviva Grand Prix on Saturday. New member Nick Leavey took the headlines of the Woodford athletes in action with a significant personal best over 400m, as he took the national race in 46.60 secs

English National CC 2009: Women 5th, Men 12th

Kat Sparke
This, the 122nd edition of the legendary English National Cross Country Championships, saw a best-ever performance from our women's team, who finished 5th, and a very sound result from our men in 12th place. An injured Kat Sparke led home the women in a very brave 8th, while Hywel Care carried the flag for the men, in 51st.

Parliament Hill Fields, the most taxing of courses, regularly shatters dreams as clubs and individuals who come to the race with high hopes find that the course has a variety of methods of punishing anything less than top form and the best of luck. Even if the athlete has not started too quickly, or lost a shoe, or fallen into a boggy hole, they often find the draining climbs taunting them that they have come to the race tired, hungry or "lacking hill-work". Only the very strong survive to report a success story.
