European U/23 Championships Day 1

WGwEL athletes were in action today in Kaunas, Lithuania representing GB&NI at the European U/23 Championships. Elaine O'Neill, progressed though to the final of the 100m after placing 2nd in her heat with 11.69 secs (-0.8) and then placing 3rd in her semi-final with 11.65 secs (-1.2). Tara Bird placed 4th in her heat of the 800m recording 2m05.67 secs,  but did not progress to the final.

European U/20 Championships

UKA have today announced their final selections for the forthcoming European U/20 Championships. Joining Junior Ejehu (200m and 4x100) who was announced in the initial wave,  Woodford athletes Eugene Ayanful (100m and 4x100m) and Maria Seager (PV) have been confirmed today. In addition, HCA member Rachel Giwa (4x100m) has also been named.

English Schools Championships

ImageAlex Cornwell, running a superb race for Essex, set a new personal best performance in winning the English Schools senior boys 1500m. in 3min. 50.95sec. Dale Clutterbuck, also of Essex was 3rd.

Billy Falconer did a great personal best of 1.96m.  to win the intermediate boys high jump and gain selection to represent England in the home countries international in Antrim while Anthony Oshodi took the senior boys shot putt title.


UK Championships and World Trials

Nusrat Ceesay
There were seven medals for WGwEL athletes and many other fine performances at the Aviva UK Championships and World Championship Trials held at Birmingham over the weekend. Performances were led by victories for Joice Maduaka (100m), Nusrat Ceesay (400mH) and Emeka Udechuku (DT).

The first Woodford victory went to Nusrat Cessay, who took her first ever national senior title over 400mH. Starting steadily Nusrat drew into contention with 100m to go and finished very strongly as she took the title in a personal best of 57.13 secs. The next victory went to Joice Maduaka who took her sixth senior national title over 100m as she recorded 11.52 secs, having earlier recorded 11.45 secs in qualifying. Joice was later 5th in a close 200m with 23.65 secs.
