Norman Park Bromley : 21st June 2009

            Points
1. Blackheath & Bromley    494
2. Team Southampton    394
3. WGEL        365
4. Medway & Maidstone    272

Despite coming 3rd in this 4th round match, WGEL again picked up a healthy number of team points, which could prove to be the difference between staying up and being relegated. We currently lie in 11th place with 7 points, equal with two other clubs. The 5th and final round match is at home on 19th July. It is vital that we field  the best team we can muster. Please could all YA’s and coaches let the team managers know your availability .

On this occasion two under 15yr team members were nominated for Athlete of the Match Awards. New joiner Chloe Michaed achieved a Grade 1 time of 12.8 sec for 100m. Chloe also obtained good team points in the High Jump, Long Jump and relay. For his team effort and excellent attitude the boys award goes to Connor Ives, who competed well in the 80H, 800m and Hammer.

Sprinter Sam Watts is the first of several aspiring WGwEL athletes to hear that he has been selected to represent GB&NI in a major championship this summer. The 17 year old, coached by Gladys Bird, will compete over 200m in the World Youth Championships in Bressanone, Italy, July 8th-12th.

Ronnie Sparke and Alex Cornwell
And Ronnie Sparke has the prospect of running for the GB U20 squad at the European Junior Championships in Serbia in July. His time of 14m 25s for 5000m at Watford last week was inside the qualifying time of 14:30 (and also broke Colin Moxom’s club record set way back in 1966!). He now has to perform well at the forthcoming trials to be assured of selection.

Junior Ejehu
This weekend saw WGwEL athletes busy around the UK, and overseas. Most were competing at the South of England Championships at Watford where no less than 24 medals were won in the combined senior and U/20 Championships. Perhaps the best of those performances came from 18 year old Junior Ejehu who took the U/20 200m title in 21.36 secs (+0.1), after recording a personal best of 21.30 secs (+1.0) in winning his semi-final and equalling the "A" standard qualifying time for the European Under 20 Championships.
