Young Athlete Helpers

Dear Parent/Guardian, July 2020

WGEL AC Young Athletes Helper/Assistance Coach Scheme

My name is Paul and I am one of the Young Athlete Secretaries at Woodford Green with Essex Ladies AC. We are continuing to develop the athletic club through grassroots level, whether that is by encouraging and developing our U/11’s section that we coach on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, through to Juniors U/13 to U/20’s and then hopefully onwards into the seniors ranks of the club.

These sessions that we continue to run are always maintained by fully qualified coaches, together with help from assistant coaches, down to parent helpers. It is this method of foundation in athletics that helps us as a club to deliver quality coaching, which leads to enhancing the abilities of the athletes that we coach to a high standard.

Over the last couple of years, our numbers have increaseddramatically in the u/11’s. This has led to us as a club requiring more assistance/help, vital for our continued delivery of excellence to these young children. Along with this extra help, will also in turn enable us to further develop our club and grow stronger in the future.

With this in mind, we would like to start a new scheme within the club. This involves the Junior section of the club, athletes that are still training and competing, but are able to contribute to assisting/helping the u/11 squad. This is open to boys & girls that are 15 years old and above. They will be able to work alongside the qualified coaches, gaining valuable experience for themselves in the day to day running of an athletic club. With supervision, they will be able to take part in the sessions: warm-up, drills, main body of the session and cool down, basically all that they have learnt from their time as an athlete. From this experience, once they are 16 years of age, they can have the opportunity of taking the assistant coaching course if they desire to, although this is optional.

Therefore, to encourage these young athletes to take up this opportunity, we are able to offer them the following:

1)    WGEL White T-Shirt (Personalised by child’s initials and club badge on the front. The back it will have: WGEL HELPER.

2)    Coaches stopwatch/whistle pack

These will be given to your child once they have been able to complete at least 5 sessions helping out. It will also show us that your child has a willingness to commit to helping/assisting the club in its future developments.

Kind Regards

Paul Cheal
