2018-19 Met League race 4: Senior Women

A comfortable second division win for our senior women at Scrubs on Saturday cemented their position in second place by taking them 100 points clear of the cluster of clubs chasing VPH ‘B’ for the top spot and promotion to the premier division.

After many seasons of incompletion, and in a League record women’s field of 293, we turned out a fourth successive 'plus-size squad' of the winter as a svelte septet tackled two laps of the unusually dry, pancake flat, course.

The five scorers were Suzanne Phillips (21), running brilliantly on any level for that position, but made the more impressive by the fact that it was done straight off a 75 hour week-ending night shift! Next by 20” was Rachel Lund (30), looking 'lean and mean’ after a race-filled festive break, as she banks the marathon miles and just 11” behind her, another great run from Alicia McArdell making it 3 in 36, running strongly after her excellent run for 17th at the 10k-equalised Essex XC Championship. Beccy Wilby (68) was fourth scorer, equalling her position at Uxbridge with another solid run, and in fifth only 11” behind it was the team’s second mega-miler Zoe Watson who closed 5 in 71.

In sixth V50 Jenny Thomas (163) was pleased to have recovered some ground on Uxbridge’s performance, followed by fellow V50 Alex Wardle (192).

Delighted with their result and to have dented VPH’s lead by 31 points, the gap remains at a challenging 44, so the women realise they will have it all to do at the Ally pally showdown next month to pull off a victory. But stranger things have happened...
