Please note that club members who have not paid their annual subscriptions for 2019 have not been registered for competition for this summer or winter season. Those who paid for last year’s membership will have their registration lapse at the end of this month (JUNE). If you wish to continue to compete, please pay any outstanding subs before the end of this month and you will be registered for competition.
Simbi Sikuru and Precious Hamilton have been selected to go to the English Schools T&F Champs this summer. Both athletes, as well as several other throwers at WGEL, are coached by Norman Simmonds. Simbi is currently lying 7th in the UK U17 Hammer ranking, having thrown 51.86m to win the Essex Championships. And Precious, who joined us around the turn of the year from Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets, lies 13th on the U20 Discus ranking as a bottom year, with a throw of 37.66m at the Southern U20 Champs this month. She will be representing London. Congratulations to both athletes.
Haslers, the Loughton-based chartered accounts company, have been very supportive sponsors of the Roding Valley Half Marathon over the years, so the club was keen to support their charity quiz last Thursday.
Bright sparks! Our quiz winners with their hamper of chocolate
The team comprised David “Evil” Hollingworth, Cowsi Magol with their respective Christine wives, former University Challenge champion Harold “Warwick” Wyber, plus a few friends. The team scored particularly well on the “Sporting Venues” round, even though the mighty Ashton Playing Fields did not feature on this occasion. By the end the other teams, consisting of many of Haslers' clients, and including a frightening number of solicitors and wealth managers, had been put in their place. The photo shows the team with the winners' trophy, which is nearly as prestigious as the coveted “Egg Box Trophy” awarded at the club’s Music Quiz, which sadly won’t be featuring the “Evil” team this year due to holiday commitments.
On a warm Wednesday evening in Braintree this week, Angus Holford picked up the silver medal in the Essex 10,000m championships.
The results of the third and final league match are on the linked EXCEL file and include all the year groups by page.
On behalf of the club, thank you all for supporting our cross country league matches. I hope that all the competitors and the many spectators (family, team mangers and friends) enjoyed the event. This is the 23rd year we have held this event and there has been continued support from all the regular attendees as well as some new schools this year, attending for the first time.
