Impressive marks set indoors around Europe

Competing at an International meeting in Vienna on Tuesday evening, Christian North moved up to 3rd in this winter's UK indoor rankings when clearing 5.26m for 3rd place in the Pole Vault. Andy Brown showed good form over 800m, placing 3rd in the "B" race in 1.51.20, and moving up to 9th on the UK rankings.

WGwEL's leading women sprinters, Joice Maduaka and Jeanette Kwakye were both in action at different international meetings over the weekend. On Saturday in Stuttgart, Joice placed 4th in the 60m in 7.34 secs. At Ghent on Sunday Jeanette won over 60m, improving her season's best to 7.27 secs, and consolidating her position at the top of the UK Rankings.

In the Midland Counties indoor championships on Saturday Christian North was back in action, winning the Pole vault with a CBP of 5.15m.

In the UK Indoor City Challenge held at the new Picketts Lock track, Woodford stars helped pull London North from bottom spot into a respectable 2nd. by the end of the meeting.

Local girl Joanne Duncan improved on her previous performance in the S. of England Championships by winning the shot putt with a great 16.01m. an early UK best performance for 2007 while Emeka Udechuku did likewise in the men’s shot with 18.13m.. Emeka’s win came after a nail biting contest with Australian Chris Gaviglio, competing for Bristol, who he beat by just 1cm. This result brought him the accolade of “Man of the Match”.

There was another close contest in the men’s triple jump where Tosin Oke beat the fancied Julian Golley by also 1cm. to win with 16.24m.

GB Combined Events Match, Zaragoza, Spain

This weekend GB Combined Events team contested the annual match with Spain, Czech Republic, France and Netherlands. This year the venue was Zaragoza in Northern Spain. James Wright secured his place after coming 4th at the AAA's two weeks ago with a tied score with the third placed athlete, Dean Showler Davis.

Men improve in Southern CC Champs

The men's CC team improved on last year's performance in the South of England Cross Country Championships at Holkham Hall in Norfolk on Saturday. Compared with last winter's 9th place in the vital 6-to-score competition, which at the time was our best team position in decades, we finished 7th this weekend. We also placed 5th in the 12-to-score competition and successfully retained the Essex Cup for the first Essex club to close 12 men.
