GB Team for European Team Cup

WGwEL's Andy Frost (Hammer) and Joice Maduaka (4x100m) have been named in the GB&NI team for the new-look European Team Championships in Leira, Portugal, next weekend.

Club Record for Maria

Competing in the Super 8 competition at Cardiff yesterday evening, Maria Seager recorded a personal best and new WGwEL U/20 record as she cleared 3.97m in the pole vault. Maria is moving ever closer to the UKA qualification mark of 4.05 for this year's World Junior Championships. Elaine O'Neill, who has already achieved the qualification mark for the European U/23 Championships took the 100m in 11.74 secs (-1.0), and Callum Priestley, whose best mark so far this season of 13.87 secs over 110mH is just 0.7 secs outside the required mark for those same Championships, placed 2nd in the 110mH with 14.00 secs (-1.1). Stuart Harvey recorded 65.23m in the javelin.

After the disappointment of last year which saw WGwEL's women relegated from the top divison of the UKWL, the team demonstrated their determination to bounce straight back into the top flight with an emphatic win at Cardiff on Saturday. They ran out winners with 232 points, 64 ahead of Team Southampton on 166. As did the men on Sunday at Sheffield,  they too had to cope with wet and windy conditions, but there were still some fine performances. Given the margin of victory points were scored heavilly in many events, but there were notable double victories for Jo Ryan and Katie Skelding in the 400m, and from Maria Seager and Louise Shortland in the PV.

Overseas Action

A number of WGwEL athletes were in action at the EAP meeting on Saturday in Geneva, and Olympic finalist Sarah Claxton made her outdoor debut for the season in Norway.
