After the disappointment of last year which saw WGwEL's women relegated from the top divison of the UKWL, the team demonstrated their determination to bounce straight back into the top flight with an emphatic win at Cardiff on Saturday. They ran out winners with 232 points, 64 ahead of Team Southampton on 166. As did the men on Sunday at Sheffield,  they too had to cope with wet and windy conditions, but there were still some fine performances. Given the margin of victory points were scored heavilly in many events, but there were notable double victories for Jo Ryan and Katie Skelding in the 400m, and from Maria Seager and Louise Shortland in the PV.

Overseas Action

A number of WGwEL athletes were in action at the EAP meeting on Saturday in Geneva, and Olympic finalist Sarah Claxton made her outdoor debut for the season in Norway.

BAL Premiership

Andy Frost
Amidst torrential downpours and strong winds at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium on Sunday, WGwEL's men produced a solid all-round team performance in placing third, behind NEB and Birchfield, in the first BAL Premiership meeting of the season. Woodford's team, which had a number of younger athletes making their BAL debuts as well as experience elsewhere, were led off to a fine start in the meeting's first event, the hammer, as Andy Frost and Mark Dry took a double victory.

Andy who relinquished his position as Britain's number one last year as he struggled following knee surgery, reaffirmed his position last week with a 70.36m effort, and confirmed that form as he took victory in the rain with 69.10m. Andy was ably backed up by debutant Mark who took the "B" event with a fine personal best of 68.32m - the best of three p.b's Mark threw during the competition. It was the hammer, together with the other throws, that laid the foundation for Woodford's team performance.
