Woodford’s fell race devotees largely stayed away from Orion’s annual midsummer fell race at Chingford last Friday with just a brace of Holfords taking part.
Angus Holford (recently crowned North Carolina state champion over a road race mile; see RockyMountTelegram) was aiming to win the three mile fell race for a fourth successive year but had to content himself with third place over the fast, bone dry conditions; a huge contrast to last year’s quagmire. Both William Stanley (Barts), first in 20m20s and Glenn Hughes (Serpentine) second in 20m29, managed to squeeze under Angus’ 2015 course record (20:31). Angus was 8 seconds down on his previous best for his third place this year. Meanwhile, Alistair Holford finished as the second M60, 46th of the hundred finishers with second claimer Grant Corton (running in Orion’s colours) a little ahead in 42nd (29:12).
The fell race is certainly not the faint hearted with 900 feet of climbing over the three miles, plenty of steep descents weaving through the forest and no chance for the runners to admire the view from the top of Pole Hill until they cross the finishing line after their second ascent.
