Six of our Under 15s made the trip to Sutton Park, Birmingham, for the England Under 15 5k Road Race Champs being staged for the first time before the famous Men's 12-Stage and Women's 6-Stage National Relays.
On this occasion, the weather was kind to our athletes, with it being slightly warmer than of late and the sun shining.
There were about 30 runners in the U15 Boys race, which was held over the tough park course that includes many hills. The standard was good, with a large number of Aldershot runners on the line. Rhys Edwards (above, photo by Estelle Savidge) led the team home in 7th place in 17mins 29secs, a huge PB of nearly 50 seconds (how this lad has improved over last year!). Ben Sloan was not far behind Rhys with another PB, of 17mins 42secs for 10th. Sam Sloan, slightly short of training recently through no fault of his own, battled hard for 17th in 18mins 50secs. After setting a PB recently at Harlow, Liam Waldron took another few seconds off to finish 21st in 19mins 27secs.
Although Aldershot won the team race, only 6 points separated the next three teams and we were the unlucky ones to miss out on medals this time in 4th spot. Rhys and Ben now have the Mini Marathon to look forward to next Sunday, and at least it will be flat and some 180 metres shorter.
It is worth noting we were without the services of Kai Boggon (triathlon course), and Sidnie Ward and Kieran Allgood who were both on holiday.
Wren Maclean-Jackson and Ellen Savidge both ran in the Under 15 Girls race with about 30 on the start line again. Both girls excelled to record PBs with Wren having a fine run for 6th in 20mins 28secs, and Ellen also running well for 15th in 21mins 50secs.

The athletes enjoyed the trip to the Midlands and lets hope we can continue to nurture these youngsters so they can all be part of our Senior teams in years to come.
