Several Woodford runners braved the elements to compete for West Essex in the Essex Schools Cross Country Champs at the appropriately named Hillyfields on Saturday.
Woodford had two runners in the first Junior Girls race. Wren Jackson, (photo above) was tripped and fell at the start and showed great courage and determination to pick herself up, dust herself down and work her way through the pack to finish a very creditable 28th, disappointed, however she still had a smile on her face at the end. Georgina Hanford was our second runner home, running very well for 37th in the 3.3km course.
In the Junior boys race Woodford certainly made a statement with five boys in the 6 man West Essex squad, all in the top 20 in a field of almost 80 runners. First home was Kai Boggon (photo) in 2nd with Sidnie Ward close behind in 5th, both making it through to the English Schools finals in Norwich. Kieran Allgood was next home in 8th with a fine run, then Liam Waldron 15th (photo below right) and Joe Morgan 17th, all three happy with their performances and rewarded with an Essex Vest for the Inter-Counties on the 4th Feb.
In the Intermediate Girls race Louise Gilbert (photo below left) came in looking very strong to finish in 11th position, again winning an Essex vest for the Inter-Counties match. Siena Taylor, our next girl in, managed a great 21st place, putting her in 1st reserve spot for the Inter-Counties.
Finally, in the Intermediate Boys, Joe Geller, now a bottom year runner in the school’s age groups and much happier running 800m indoors, wasn’t looking forward to the increase to 5300m. However, having dropped to 25th at the end of the first lap, he found himself 21st with 300m to go, and with his Woodford teammate Kieran running alongside shouting encouragement, he found just enough to pull himself to 20th in the sprint.
