RIP Bob Corbett

It is with sadness that we have learned of the death of Bob Corbett.

He joined our club shortly after Essex Ladies merged with Woodford Green AC. and became an Associate Member. Over the years he produced some very successful athletes notably his daughter Kirsty, Hannah Frankson, Holly Patti-Belleli and Chloe Galloway. A few years ago he decided to become an independent coach and moved his training base to the Lea Valley Centre, also participating in event workshops. He still kept close ties with WG and EL and will be greatly missed.

Bob was a devoted family man with a passion for our sport, and our sympathies are with his wife Angie and family at this difficult time.

RIP Howard Williams

Howard Williams was a great friend to WGEL. He was always involved with the Roding Valley Half Marathon when it was regularly the county championships and is best known as the Met League founder and organiser, and Secretary of Essex AA.

Ilford AC's Andy Catton writes:

Sad news of the passing of Howard Williams, one of the great unsung heroes of the sport. He was not just a talented middle and long distance runner in his day but an absolute legend of an official and administrator and race organiser. He was a stalwart of Ilford AC as Road and Cross Country Officer, General Secretary of Essex AA, a CAU officer, organiser of the Metropolitan League XC and seemingly ever-present in some capacity at Essex, Southern, CAU and National XC over four decades between the 60's and 90's. Many will have received their finish disc from Howard at the end of major xc races. A total inspiration and a totally modest man.
