Bob Corbett's funeral (see recent Announcement) will take place at Greenacres, North Weald on Thursday 4th May at 1:30 pm.
It is with sadness that we have learned of the death of Bob Corbett.
He joined our club shortly after Essex Ladies merged with Woodford Green AC. and became an Associate Member. Over the years he produced some very successful athletes notably his daughter Kirsty, Hannah Frankson, Holly Patti-Belleli and Chloe Galloway. A few years ago he decided to become an independent coach and moved his training base to the Lea Valley Centre, also participating in event workshops. He still kept close ties with WG and EL and will be greatly missed.
Bob was a devoted family man with a passion for our sport, and our sympathies are with his wife Angie and family at this difficult time.
To all members
I hereby give notice that the 109th Annual General Meeting of the Woodford Green Athletic Club with Essex Ladies will be held on Friday, 28th April 2017, at the Clubhouse, Ashton Playing Fields, Chigwell Road, Woodford Green, commencing at 7.45 p.m. Your attendance is requested.
As an extra incentive, drinks and nibbles will be served, courtesy of the Evergreens!
I very much hope that as many of you as possible will be able to attend.
Hon. General Secretary.
Howard Williams was a great friend to WGEL. He was always involved with the Roding Valley Half Marathon when it was regularly the county championships and is best known as the Met League founder and organiser, and Secretary of Essex AA.
Ilford AC's Andy Catton writes:
Sad news of the passing of Howard Williams, one of the great unsung heroes of the sport. He was not just a talented middle and long distance runner in his day but an absolute legend of an official and administrator and race organiser. He was a stalwart of Ilford AC as Road and Cross Country Officer, General Secretary of Essex AA, a CAU officer, organiser of the Metropolitan League XC and seemingly ever-present in some capacity at Essex, Southern, CAU and National XC over four decades between the 60's and 90's. Many will have received their finish disc from Howard at the end of major xc races. A total inspiration and a totally modest man.
Interested in skilling up to become an Endurance Official and helping out at future Met League fixtures? An Endurance Officials training course will be held in Belgrave Hall, Wimbledon across two evenings: Monday 13 March and Wednesday 22 March, both starting at 7.00pm. As a proud Met League Club we are happy to spread the word and invite members who have an interest in officiating to attend. A good many of the Met League officials (brilliant though they are) are in their late 70's and into their 80's and much as they enjoy what they do, several are looking to reduce their commitments, so it's time to encourage others to get involved, starting with gaining the basic Officials qualification.
