We say a fond farewell to Charles Stockings, who passed away on 28th July in hospital in Harlow. At 87 he was one of the oldest members of Woodford Green Athletic Club having been, in his younger years, a good cross country and road runner who also took part in track events.
He was a Life Member and Past President, and served as General Secretary for six years. Apart from running, he took part in many club activities, including the events organised by "The Evergreens", the association of older members of the club.
Charles organised many of The Evergreens' activities, including visits to the Brick Lane Music Hall, games in his garden in High Roding, The "Two Charlies" games evenings (with Charlie Crump), musical entertainment evenings, comedy evenings, lectures, visits, outings and walks.
Charles was very ably supported by his wife Margaret who was responsible, with other wives, for supplying refreshments at many activities.
Away from his club work Charles was a fanatical gardener, and he was working hard in his garden when a heart attack felled him.
For me and my wife Brenda he was a good friend who, with Margaret, accompanied us on journeys to foreign parts including Tanzania and the Caribbean.
He will be much missed by his friends, the older members of Woodford Green AC, and the people in High Roding for whom he also organised many events.
